Given the recent increase in cycle usage because of the Pandemic, Kochi metro has decided to allow cycles in the metro for free from 6 Metro stations. The move was made to increase last mile connectivity of the Metro, this is in addition to the bike-sharing setup available outside most Kochi metro stations.

The stations from which this will be allowed initially are Changampuzha Park, Palarivattom, Town Hall, Ernakulam South, Maharaja's College, and Elamkulam metro station

Cyclists will be allowed to use the elevators at the stations, and the staff will help them get in and out of the metro, the cycles will only be allowed inside the first and the last coach of the metro.

"We have permitted cycles inside the metro to promote end-to-end connectivity with the non-motorised mode of transport and also to encourage a healthy lifestyle. People are aware of the importance of fitness and exercise. This will encourage people to use cycles for their daily commute," said Additional Chief Secretary Alkesh Kumar Sharma, MD, Kochi Metro.

Kochi Metro had earlier allowed carrying folding cycles inside the metro too, with this move, non-folding cycles will be allowed too.
